Adams Center, New York

Adams Center was founded around 1816 and was first known as "Adams Five Corners." That name was used until at least 1828. The exact date of the name change is not known, but the hamlet became known as Adams Centre, a spelling that continued until about 1900.

Adams Center in Jefferson County,NY was the homwe of Melville Louis Kossuth (Melvil) Dewey, inventor of the Dewey Decimal Classification System.

The system for arranging the books is the Dewey Decimal System. Melvil Dewey invented it, and he was born in Adams Center, New York.
